Great turnout lends optimism ahead of COP

NYC Climate Week and the UN General Assembly (UNGA) marked the last chance for Heads of state and political leaders to convene before the climate negotiations at COP. With preliminary figures indicating almost 600 events and the largest in-person gathering since the pandemic, the turnout lends optimism for collective determination at the halfway point in pursuing the SDGs.

While the next COP always remains the most important, COP28 is likely the most significant since the Paris Agreement as it also marks the first Global Stocktake. The first Global Stocktake scripts the most extensive assessment of global action on climate change to date, distilling over 1,600 documents from diverse sources and drawing from consultations not only with scientists and governments but also cities, businesses, farmers, Indigenous people and civil society. Laying bare how far the world is in achieving the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, the findings present a pivotal opportunity to get all ducks in a row and come up with credible answers to spur collective climate action.

Despite the recent gatherings neither resulted in tangible agreements, new targets, or updated timetables, UNGA and Climate Week act as a foreshadowing of what’s coming up in Dubai. Amongst major topics and takeaways likely to carry through, increased focus on climate and health, financing, managing scope 3 emissions and phasing out fossil fuels are set to reframe the possible outcomes at COP28.

Together with partners of what will constitute the biggest Danish business delegation ever at a COP, State of Green will be present in Dubai with a strong focus on public-private climate action. More information about the Danish Pavilion including partners, events, and activities here.
