Cities at the heart of green transition
The battle against climate change will be won or lost in cities.
This is one of the focal points as Rotterdam hosts Urban Future 2024 this week. The conference is considered one of Europe’s largest events for urban sustainability, gathering experts, influencers, and leaders within urban planning, architecture, mobility, energy, and public administration with the ultimate goal of speeding up the transformation of cities.
And this is not a small task. Cities house over half of the world’s population and account for approximately 70% of greenhouse gas emissions, thus playing a powerful role in uniting communities and driving investment that can shape the green transition.
Two weeks from now, the discussions will continue in Germany, when Hamburg opens its city gates for Building Green on June 19-20. Here, actionable strategies to reduce the construction industry’s climate footprint will be on the agenda, with international speakers sharing insights on sustainable urban development. Presenting learnings from Denmark’s urban green transition, State of Green will host two side events in Hamburg alongside Adept and WERK Architects, sharing a sneak peek of innovative visions to shape the future of urban spaces.
With public-private partnerships and cross-sector collaboration, Danish cities hold a long tradition of implementing urban development through a holistic approach where the environment, people and businesses go hand in hand. Cities like Copenhagen, Aarhus and Aalborg have all made climate plans and set ambitious climate targets towards becoming carbon neutral in the near future.
The last-mentioned is preparing to host the European Conference on Sustainable Cities & Towns in October. Building upon the "Aalborg Charter" signed back in 1994, the conference returns to Denmark, gathering over 1,000 politicians and civil servants from across Europe with an ambition to develop new conditions on how European municipalities can best support the green and sustainable transition. State of Green and good partners will be present to organise a networking event and present solutions and insights from Denmark’s urban green transition.
